Walkers, in full.
Walkers Squares are square, ridged potato snacks made from a potato dough, and this Variety pack holds twelve 22g bags in three flavours: four each of Salt and Vinegar, Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion, 264g in all. Each bag is one serving, and the published listing gives a separate ingredients list and nutrition table for every flavour. The pack names Walkers Snack Foods Ltd as the maker.
The squares
Every bag starts with potato granules, sunflower oil and potato starch, made into flat, ridged squares. Potato granules are dried, cooked potato, the same thing as instant mash.
Ready Salted
Ready Salted adds only maltodextrin and salt: potato granules, sunflower oil, potato starch, maltodextrin and salt are the whole list. It has no flavour enhancer.
Cheese and Onion
The cheese and onion flavour lists whey permeate (from milk), salt, sugar, flavouring (containing milk), rice flour, onion powder, citric and malic acid, whey protein (milk), garlic powder, cheese powder (from milk), whey milk powder, annatto bixin and paprika extract for colour, maltodextrin and skimmed milk powder. It has no MSG on its list.
Salt and Vinegar
The salt and vinegar flavour lists flavouring, citric acid, sugar, monosodium glutamate, disodium guanylate and potassium chloride, with maltodextrin and salt. There is no vinegar on the list; the tang comes from the flavouring and citric acid.
Numbers for one bag
Per 22g bag, the listing gives Cheese and Onion 97 kcal (404 kJ) and 0.3g of salt; Salt and Vinegar 97 kcal (409 kJ) and 0.48g of salt; and Ready Salted 99 kcal (414 kJ) and 0.33g of salt.
Per 100g
Per 100g, Cheese and Onion has 439 kcal and 1.38g of salt, Salt and Vinegar 443 kcal and 2.2g, and Ready Salted 449 kcal and 1.48g. Fat is 17.2g for Cheese and Onion, amber, and 18g to 19g for the other two, red; sugars are green for all three. Salt is red for Salt and Vinegar and amber for the other two.
Potato starch and maltodextrin
Potato starch binds the granules into a dough that holds its square shape, and maltodextrin, a carbohydrate made from starch, carries the seasonings evenly.
The cheese and onion bags
The cheese and onion seasoning is built on dairy: whey permeate leads, with whey protein, whey milk powder, skimmed milk powder and cheese powder, then onion and garlic, with citric and malic acid for the tang.
Disodium guanylate
Disodium guanylate, in the Salt and Vinegar bags, is a flavour enhancer usually used alongside MSG; together they give a stronger savoury effect than either alone.
Salt order
Cheese and Onion is the least salty bag, at 1.38g per 100g, then Ready Salted at 1.48g, then Salt and Vinegar at 2.2g.
The crunch
The ridges make each square crunch in two stages: the crisp edge first, then the thicker middle.
Allergens and diet
Milk is in the Cheese and Onion bags, in the whey permeate, flavouring, whey protein, cheese powder, whey milk powder and skimmed milk powder. The allergy advice says the snacks may contain cereals containing gluten and soya. The pack says they are suitable for vegetarians; it is not a vegan pack, because of the milk, and there is no gluten free claim. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
Flavour enhancers
Only the Salt and Vinegar bags use flavour enhancers, monosodium glutamate and disodium guanylate. Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion have none, so they are the bags for anyone who avoids MSG.
The colour
The pack says there are no artificial colours. Only the Cheese and Onion bags carry a colour, annatto and paprika extract.
Sugars
Sugars are green in every bag: 1.3g per 100g for Ready Salted, 3.3g for Cheese and Onion and 3.5g for Salt and Vinegar, all green on the front of pack scale.
The shape
The brand describes Squares as potato snacks with angles: flat, ridged squares with crisp edges, sturdy enough to stay whole in a lunchbox.
Fibre and protein
Fibre is 5.5g to 6.4g per 100g and protein 6.5g to 6.6g across the three flavours, from the potato.
Lunchbox rota
Three flavours make it easy to vary a week of lunchboxes: a plain day, a cheesy day and a sharp day.
Twelve bags
At 22g, each bag is one serving, 97 to 99 kcal. Twelve bags cover more than two school weeks of lunchboxes, and the three flavours keep them varied.
The pack
The red outer bag carries the Walkers logo, the Squares name, a 99 kcal per pack roundel and a 12 label with bands for four salt and vinegar, four ready salted and four cheese and onion, with one small bag of each in the corner.
Who it suits
A mixed pack suits a family lunchbox rota. Keep the Cheese and Onion bags away from anyone avoiding milk, and choose Ready Salted or Cheese and Onion for anyone avoiding MSG.
Serving ideas
Put a bag in a sandwich lunch, or tip one of each flavour into bowls for a party.
In the kitchen
Crushed, the squares make a crisp crumb for fish or chicken, or a topping for a macaroni cheese.
Storage and packaging
The pack advises a cool, dry place.
Other Squares
For a single flavour, we stock Walkers Squares Salt and Vinegar in a six pack and a 40g grab bag.

Crunch and flavour science
What happens when you eat Walkers Squares Variety Snacks comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.
The bite is crisp and firm, a ridged potato square.
The seasoning is three ways: plain salt, creamy cheese and onion, sharp salt and vinegar.
The finish is salty, cheesy or sharp, by flavour.
Getting the best from a bag
Share the bags out through a fortnight of lunchboxes.
How storage changes it
Keep the bags cool and dry until you open them.

Serving ideas
Three flavours of ridged potato squares in twelve lunch bags.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
The Lunchbox Week
Walkers Squares Variety Snacks comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
Children's Party Bags
Single bags of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks are the easiest thing to put in a party bag.
- Multipack of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks
- Party bags
- A list of the guests' allergies from their parents
- Ask parents about allergies before the party, and check the Ingredients and Nutrition tab against every answer.
- Keep each bag sealed and add it to the party bag last.
- Label any bag that goes to a child with an allergy so the right one reaches them.
When in doubt about an allergy, leave the crisps out of that child's bag.
The Crisp Sandwich
The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Walkers Squares Variety Snacks was practically built for.
- 2 slices of soft white bread
- Salted butter, soft enough to spread
- One bag or a good handful of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks
- Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
- Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
- Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
- Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.
Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.
The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly
How to put a sharing bag of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks out so the last handful is as good as the first.
- A sharing bag of Walkers Squares Variety Snacks
- A wide, shallow bowl
- A clip or a peg
- Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
- Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
- Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.
Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.
