Walkers, in full.
Walkers French Fries are thin, crispy potato sticks made from a potato dough, and this Variety pack holds twelve 18g bags in three flavours: four each of Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion and Salt and Vinegar, 216g in all. Each bag is one serving, and the published listing gives a separate ingredients list and nutrition table for every flavour. The pack names Walkers Snack Foods Ltd as the maker.
The sticks
Every bag starts with potato granules, potato starch and sunflower oil, made into long, thin, slightly twisted sticks. Potato granules are dried, cooked potato, the same thing as instant mash.
Ready Salted
Ready Salted adds salt, monosodium glutamate and annatto norbixin for colour. It is the saltiest bag, at 2.5g of salt per 100g.
Cheese and Onion
The cheese and onion flavour lists whey permeate (from milk), salt, sugar, flavouring (containing milk), rice flour, onion powder, citric and malic acid, whey protein (milk), garlic powder, cheese powder (from milk), whey milk powder, annatto bixin and paprika extract for colour, maltodextrin and skimmed milk powder. It has no MSG on its list, and it is the least salty bag, at 1.38g per 100g.
Salt and Vinegar
The salt and vinegar flavour lists flavouring, salt, citric and malic acid, potassium chloride and flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate and disodium 5'-ribonucleotides), with more salt and annatto norbixin. There is no vinegar on the list; the tang comes from the flavouring and the fruit acids.
Numbers for one bag
Per 18g bag, the listing gives Ready Salted 78 kcal (328 kJ) and 0.45g of salt; Salt and Vinegar 79 kcal (331 kJ) and 0.41g of salt; and Cheese and Onion 80 kcal (336 kJ) and 0.25g of salt. Fat is 2.9g to 3g a bag for all three.
Per 100g
Per 100g, Ready Salted has 434 kcal and 2.5g of salt, Salt and Vinegar 438 kcal and 2.3g, and Cheese and Onion 446 kcal and 1.38g. On the UK front of pack scale all three are amber for fat, at 16g to 16.6g, and green for saturates and sugars; salt is red for Ready Salted and Salt and Vinegar and amber for Cheese and Onion.
Potato starch
Potato starch binds the granules into a dough that holds its thin stick shape and crisps evenly.
The cheese and onion bags
The cheese and onion seasoning is built on dairy: whey permeate leads, with whey protein, whey milk powder, skimmed milk powder and cheese powder, then onion and garlic, with citric and malic acid for the tang.
Sugars
Sugars are green in every bag: 1.1g per 100g for Ready Salted, 1.2g for Salt and Vinegar and 2.1g for Cheese and Onion, all green on the front of pack scale.
Allergens and diet
Milk is in the Cheese and Onion bags, in the whey permeate, flavouring, whey protein, cheese powder, whey milk powder and skimmed milk powder. The allergy advice says the snacks may contain wheat, barley and other cereals containing gluten, and soya. The pack says they are suitable for vegetarians; it is not a vegan pack, because of the milk, and there is no gluten free claim. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
MSG
Ready Salted and Salt and Vinegar use monosodium glutamate; Cheese and Onion does not, so it is the bag for anyone who avoids MSG.
About MSG
Monosodium glutamate is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, the savoury compound found naturally in tomatoes and aged cheese. It rounds and deepens a salty flavour.
The colour
All three are coloured with annatto, a natural orange colour made from the seeds of the achiote tree, and Cheese and Onion adds paprika extract. The pack says there are no artificial colours.
Twelve bags
At 18g, each bag is a small portion, 78 to 80 kcal. Twelve bags cover more than two school weeks of lunchboxes, and the three flavours keep them varied.
The pack
The blue outer bag carries the Walkers logo, the golden French Fries script, a 78 kcal per pack roundel and a 12 label with bands for four ready salted, four cheese and onion and four salt and vinegar, with one small bag of each in the corner.
Lunchbox rota
Three flavours make it easy to vary a week of lunchboxes: a plain day, a cheesy day and a sharp day.
Who it suits
A mixed pack of light potato sticks suits a family lunchbox rota. Keep the Cheese and Onion bags away from anyone avoiding milk, and choose them for anyone avoiding MSG.
Serving ideas
Put a bag in a sandwich lunch, or tip one of each flavour into bowls for a party.
In the kitchen
Crushed, French Fries make a fine crumb for the top of a macaroni cheese or a coating for chicken strips.
Storage and packaging
The pack advises a cool, dry place.
Other French Fries
The same three flavours come in six and twenty bag Variety packs, and Ready Salted comes on its own in a six pack.

Crunch and flavour science
What happens when you eat Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.
The bite is light and crisp all the way through, a thin potato stick.
The seasoning is three ways: plain salt, creamy cheese and onion, sharp salt and vinegar.
The finish is salty, cheesy or sharp, by flavour.
Getting the best from a bag
Share the bags out through a fortnight of lunchboxes.
How storage changes it
Keep the bags cool and dry until you open them.

Serving ideas
Three flavours of thin potato sticks in twelve lunch bags.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
The Lunchbox Week
Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
Children's Party Bags
Single bags of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks are the easiest thing to put in a party bag.
- Multipack of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks
- Party bags
- A list of the guests' allergies from their parents
- Ask parents about allergies before the party, and check the Ingredients and Nutrition tab against every answer.
- Keep each bag sealed and add it to the party bag last.
- Label any bag that goes to a child with an allergy so the right one reaches them.
When in doubt about an allergy, leave the crisps out of that child's bag.
The Crisp Sandwich
The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks was practically built for.
- 2 slices of soft white bread
- Salted butter, soft enough to spread
- One bag or a good handful of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks
- Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
- Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
- Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
- Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.
Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.
The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly
How to put a sharing bag of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks out so the last handful is as good as the first.
- A sharing bag of Walkers French Fries Variety Snacks
- A wide, shallow bowl
- A clip or a peg
- Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
- Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
- Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.
Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.
