Proper, in full.
Proper Prawn Cocktail in a five bag multipack puts a tangy, sweet lentil chip into 14g bags, 70g in total. At 65 kcal a bag on the label, these are some of the smallest bags in our range, which suits lunchboxes, small appetites and anyone who wants a taste rather than a full bag. The full product name on the pack is Lentil based chips with prawn cocktail flavour seasoning.
What is in each bag
According to the published pack listing, the chips are made from lentil flour (29%), potato starch, corn flour, vegetable oils (rapeseed and sunflower), sugar, rice flour, salt, natural flavouring, an acidity regulator (citric acid), Chilean salt, onion powder, tomato powder, garlic powder, black pepper and paprika extract for colour.
Prawn cocktail, without the prawns
A prawn cocktail flavour is really a sauce flavour: the sweet, tangy pink sauce made from mayonnaise and tomato ketchup. This seasoning builds it from sugar for the sweetness, tomato powder for the ketchup, citric acid for the tang, and onion and garlic for savour, with a little black pepper for warmth. There is no seafood on the list, and the pack says the chips are suitable for vegans.
Two kinds of salt
The list names salt twice: salt, and Chilean salt, which is simply salt from Chile, named as its own ingredient. Together they make this a salty chip, and the label gives 2g of salt per 100g, red on the front of pack scale. In a 14g bag, though, that comes to 0.28g.
A small bag
The Walkers and McCoy's multipack bags we stock hold 25g, and the Doritos bags 30g. A 14g bag is about half the smaller of those, which suits a young child's lunchbox, a mid afternoon snack, or anyone who wants a taste rather than a full bag. Five bags cover a school week.
Numbers for one bag
The label gives 65 kcal (274 kJ), 2.7g of fat, 0.2g of saturates, 8.7g of carbohydrate, 0.6g of sugars, 0.3g of fibre, 1.4g of protein and 0.28g of salt for each 14g bag. That is about 3% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 5% of the salt. Per 100g it is 467 kcal (1961 kJ), 19.5g of fat, 1.6g of saturates, 62g of carbohydrate, 4g of sugars, 2.3g of fibre, 9.8g of protein and 2g of salt.
Reading the front of the pack
On the UK front of pack scale, per 100g, fat at 19.5g is red, just above 17.5g. Saturates at 1.6g are amber, only just. Sugars at 4g are green. Salt at 2g is red.
Black pepper and tomato
Two small ingredients shape the flavour. Tomato powder, dried tomato ground fine, brings the ketchup side of the sauce and a little natural sweetness. Black pepper, near the end of the list, adds a gentle warmth and a savoury edge, the way a pinch of pepper finishes a homemade prawn cocktail sauce.
Sugar and the tang
Sugar comes early in the list, ahead of the rice flour and salt, and it is there to balance the citric acid. Sweet and sharp together is the whole character of prawn cocktail sauce, so the two are the core of this seasoning.
Lentil flour
Lentil flour is the first ingredient, 29% of the chips, with potato starch, corn flour and rice flour. Lentils are a pulse, and the flour gives the chips 9.8g of protein per 100g.
Chilean salt
Chilean salt appears beside ordinary salt, and the label gives 2g of salt per 100g, red on the front of pack scale, and 0.28g in a 14g bag.
Allergens and diet
No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the published ingredients, and no crustacean ingredient is listed. The pack's allergy advice says it may contain soya. The pack says the chips are suitable for vegans and vegetarians and carries a gluten free claim. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
How the chips are made
The published listing does not say how the chips are cooked. They are formed from a mix of lentil flour and starches, and the seasoning is applied afterwards. The label says the bags are packaged in a protective atmosphere and advises storing them in a cool, dry place. The pack names Proper as the maker.
For lunchboxes
A small, vegan bag with a gluten free claim is a useful lunchbox snack for a class where some children avoid dairy or gluten, with the usual reminder that anyone with an allergy should read the pack. Pair it with a sandwich and some fruit.
In the kitchen
A crushed bag makes a tangy crumb over a prawn and avocado salad or a bowl of tomato soup, adding the flavour of the sauce with a crunch. One 14g bag is enough to top a single bowl.
Other sizes and flavours
The same flavour comes as an 85g sharing bag. Proper also makes Barbecue, Salt and Vinegar and Sea Salt lentil chips in five bag multipacks of 14g bags, all of which we stock, so a mixed week of small bags is easy to build.
Storage
Keep the bags in the outer pack in a cool, dry place, and finish each bag once it is opened.

The bite is a light, airy lentil chip, crumbly rather than glassy.
The seasoning is sweet and tangy: sugar, tomato powder and citric acid for the sauce, onion, garlic and black pepper for savour, and two salts.
The finish is tangy and gently peppery, clearing quickly.

Serving ideas
Small, tangy, vegan bags for lunchboxes and small appetites.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
The Lunchbox Week
Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
Children's Party Bags
Single bags of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips are the easiest thing to put in a party bag.
- Multipack of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips
- Party bags
- A list of the guests' allergies from their parents
- Ask parents about allergies before the party, and check the Ingredients and Nutrition tab against every answer.
- Keep each bag sealed and add it to the party bag last.
- Label any bag that goes to a child with an allergy so the right one reaches them.
When in doubt about an allergy, leave the crisps out of that child's bag.
Prawn Cocktail Lettuce Cups
The seventies starter the flavour is named after, with Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips for crunch on top.
- 200g cooked, peeled prawns
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
- A squeeze of lemon
- Little Gem lettuce leaves
- A handful of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips
- Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup and lemon into a Marie Rose sauce.
- Stir the prawns through the sauce.
- Spoon into the lettuce leaves and crumble a few crisps over each one just before serving.
Keep the prawns cold and serve straight away; they are not for leaving out.
Crunchy Salad Topper
A handful of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips does the job croutons do on a salad, with no oven involved.
- A bowl of dressed salad leaves
- Cherry tomatoes and cucumber
- A handful of Proper Prawn Cocktail Lentil Chips
- Dress the salad first and toss it well.
- Break the crisps into large pieces over the top.
- Serve at once, before the dressing reaches them.
Add them after the dressing, never before, or they soak it up and soften.
