Walkers, in full.
Salt and Shake are plain Walkers crisps with the salt on the side: each bag holds unsalted crisps and a little blue twist of salt, so you decide how much goes on. This is the multipack of six 24g bags, 144g in all. The full product name on the pack is 6 x Salt and Shake potato crisps with separate salt sachet, and the maker on the label is Walkers Snack Foods Ltd.
The ingredients
According to the printed pack, the crisps are made from potatoes, vegetable oils (sunflower and rapeseed, in varying proportions), salt, in the sachet, and antioxidants (rosemary extract, ascorbic acid, tocopherol rich extract and citric acid).
The blue twist
The salt comes in a little blue twist inside each bag. Open the bag, untwist the salt, sprinkle as little or as much as you like, close the top and give the bag a shake. Or leave the salt out altogether.
The salt figure
The label gives 0.05g of salt per 100g and 0.01g in a bag, green on the front of pack scale. That can only be the crisps without the sachet: the salt you add from the twist goes on top, and the listing does not give the sachet's salt figure.
Unsalted crisps
Without the sachet, the crisps taste of potato and oil alone, which makes them useful for dips that are salty already and for cooking, with the salt in your hands.
Antioxidants
Rosemary extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), tocopherol rich extract (vitamin E) and citric acid are antioxidants that help keep the oil fresh.
Numbers for one bag
The label gives 126 kcal, 7.4g of fat, 0.6g of saturates, 13g of carbohydrate, 0.1g of sugars, 1g of fibre, 1.6g of protein and 0.01g of salt for each 24g bag of crisps. That is about 6% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 11% of the fat.
Numbers per 100g
Per 100g the label gives 525 kcal, 31g of fat, 2.5g of saturates, 53g of carbohydrate, 0.4g of sugars, 4g of fibre, 6.5g of protein and 0.05g of salt, for the crisps without the sachet.
Reading the front of the pack
On the UK front of pack scale, per 100g, fat at 31g is red. Saturates at 2.5g are amber. Sugars at 0.4g are green. Salt at 0.05g is green, before the sachet.
Sunflower and rapeseed oil
The listing gives sunflower and rapeseed oils in varying proportions. The label gives 31g of fat per 100g and 7.4g in a bag.
Carbohydrate and fibre
The label gives 53g of carbohydrate per 100g, of which 0.4g are sugars; the rest is starch from the potato. Fibre is 4g and protein 6.5g per 100g.
Potatoes
Potatoes are the first ingredient, sliced and fried into thin, classic Walkers crisps, with no seasoning on them.
How much salt
The listing does not give the salt in the sachet, so if you are counting salt, add a little at a time.
Sugars and protein
The label gives 0.4g of sugars and 6.5g of protein per 100g.
Allergens and diet
No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the printed ingredients. The allergy advice on the pack says the crisps may contain milk, wheat, gluten, barley, soya, celery and mustard. The pack says they are suitable for vegetarians; there is no vegan statement. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
No added MSG
The pack says there is no added MSG and no artificial colours, and there is no colour on the list at all.
Less plastic
The listing says there is 22% less plastic in the outer bag than in 2024.
Six bags
Six 24g bags make a school week of lunchboxes with one to spare, and each bag is one serving. The listing says the crisps are packaged in a protective atmosphere.
The pack
The white outer bag carries the Walkers logo, the blue diamond Salt and Shake logo with the words potato crisps, a large red 6, the word packs and a single bag shown beside it.
Who it suits
A crisp you salt yourself suits anyone who likes a lightly salted crisp, or none at all, and families where some want salt and some do not. The vegetarian statement suits most tables. Anyone with an allergy should read the may contain advice.
In a lunchbox
A bag goes beside a sandwich and a piece of fruit; children can add their own salt, or leave it.
In the kitchen
Unsalted crisps are the best crisps for cooking: crush them for a crumb on fish or chicken and season the dish as you like.
With dips
An unsalted crisp suits a salty dip, such as a taramasalata, a blue cheese dip or a hummus.
A family crisp
In a family pack of six, each person can salt their own, from none to the whole twist.
A crisp sandwich
An unsalted crisp in a buttered roll lets the filling season the sandwich.
With soup
Unsalted crisps crumbled over a bowl of soup let you season the bowl as you like.
A party bowl
Tip the crisps into a bowl and put the salt twists beside it, so guests can salt their own.
Storage
The listing advises a cool, dry place.
The published listing gives the United Kingdom as the country of origin. The tasting notes on this page are our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description.

Serving ideas
Crisps you salt yourself, in single bags for lunchboxes and cooking.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
The Lunchbox Week
Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
Crisp Crumbed Chicken Goujons
Crushed Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps doubles as the crumb and the seasoning, so there is nothing else to add.
- 2 chicken breasts, cut into strips
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp plain flour
- A sharing bag or two small bags of Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps
- Heat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, gas mark 6, and line a tray.
- Crush the crisps finely in the bag or a bowl with the end of a rolling pin.
- Coat each strip in flour, then egg, then press it into the crisp crumb.
- Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, turning once, until the chicken is cooked through with no pink in the middle.
The crisps are already salted, so taste before adding any more salt at the table.
The Crisp Sandwich
The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps was practically built for.
- 2 slices of soft white bread
- Salted butter, soft enough to spread
- One bag or a good handful of Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps
- Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
- Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
- Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
- Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.
Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.
Soured Cream and Chive Dip
A cool dip for Walkers Salt and Shake Crisps, and a good way to calm down anything with heat in it.
- 150ml soured cream
- A small bunch of chives, snipped
- A squeeze of lemon
- Black pepper
- Stir the chives and lemon into the soured cream.
- Season with black pepper; leave the salt to the crisps.
- Chill for ten minutes and serve in a small bowl next to the bag.
Thicker crisps and chips scoop best; thin ones are better dipped at the corner.
