Walkers in brief.
Fourteen 25g bags in one box: seven of Walkers Cheese and Onion and seven of Walkers Ready Salted, 350g in all. It is the box for a house that splits between the two, and the two recipes differ in one important way: the ready salted bags list no milk in their ingredients.
Both are classic thin potato crisps cooked in sunflower and rapeseed oil. The label gives 128 kcal for a cheese and onion bag and 130 kcal for a ready salted bag. The pack says they are suitable for vegetarians and made with no added MSG or artificial colours.
Allergens. Contains milk; may contain cereals containing gluten, mustard and soya. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
Curator notes: The tasting profile is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description. Common questions are answered in the Product Questions tab.

Walkers, in full.
This box settles an argument before it starts. Half the bags are Walkers Cheese and Onion and half are Walkers Ready Salted, seven of each, fourteen 25g bags and 350g of crisps altogether. For families where one child will only eat plain crisps and another will only eat cheese and onion, it is the whole shopping list in one box.
Two recipes, one crisp
According to the published pack listing, both flavours start from the same crisp: potatoes, sunflower and rapeseed oils in varying proportions, and four antioxidants (rosemary extract, ascorbic acid, a tocopherol rich extract and citric acid) that keep the oil fresh. The pack says the potatoes are 100% Great British potatoes.
The ready salted bags add salt and nothing else. That is the whole list, which makes ready salted the plainest crisp in the standard Walkers range and the clearest way to taste the potato and the oil on their own.
The cheese and onion bags add a seasoning instead: dried onion, salt, dried milk whey, lactose from milk, sugar, a flavouring containing milk, cheese powder from milk, dried yeast, citric and malic acids, whey protein, dried garlic, and the colours annatto bixin and paprika extract.
The milk difference
This is the detail worth knowing before you hand a bag to a child. The cheese and onion seasoning contains milk in five places. The ready salted ingredients list no milk at all. The allergy advice for the box says the crisps may contain cereals containing gluten, mustard and soya, and the listing highlights milk for the box as a whole, because the cheese and onion bags contain it.
So for a household managing a milk allergy, the ready salted bags are the ones to look at, but read the allergy advice printed on the individual bag you are giving, not only the box. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
The two nutrition panels side by side
The box carries a nutrition panel for each flavour, and comparing them shows exactly what a seasoning changes. Per 25g bag, the cheese and onion gives 128 kcal, 7.4g of fat, 0.6g of saturates, 0.7g of sugars and 0.29g of salt. The ready salted gives 130 kcal, 7.8g of fat, 0.6g of saturates, 0.1g of sugars and 0.3g of salt.
Per 100g the two have the same salt, 1.2g, and the differences are elsewhere. The ready salted crisp carries a little more fat, 31g against 29g, which fits with some of the cheese and onion crisp's weight being seasoning powder rather than potato and oil. The cheese and onion carries more sugar, 2.6g against 0.4g, from the sugar and lactose in its seasoning. On the UK front of pack scale both are high for fat, medium for saturates and salt, and low for sugars.
How they are made
Both flavours begin the same way. Potatoes are washed and cut into thin slices, rinsed to take off surface starch, and fried in the oil blend until the water has cooked out and the slices have set crisp. For ready salted, salt is scattered over the warm crisps. For cheese and onion, the powdered seasoning goes on at the same point. The box says the bags are packaged in a protective atmosphere, which keeps oxygen away from the oil until each bag is opened.
Who this box is for
Neither flavour has any heat, and the only allergen difference to explain is the milk in the cheese and onion. That makes it an easy box for a busy house, a school holiday, or a party where you do not know every guest's tastes.
The two flavours also do different jobs in the kitchen. Ready salted is the better crisp for a dip or for crumbling over soup, because it tastes of potato and salt and nothing else gets in the way. Cheese and onion is the one for a crisp sandwich or for crushing over a pasta bake, where its onion and dairy add something the dish does not already have.
If you would rather have a single flavour, we stock Walkers Cheese and Onion and Walkers Ready Salted in their own six and fourteen bag boxes, 45g bags and 150g sharing bags. For more variety, the Walkers Classic Variety box adds salt and vinegar and, in its larger sizes, prawn cocktail.
Looking after the bags
The pack advises storing the box in a cool, dry place. Keep bags sealed in the box until the day they are eaten; a sealed 25g bag stays crisp far longer than anything decanted into a tub. When the box is opened, split the two flavours into separate piles, so the people who want one flavour do not have to dig for it and a bag with milk in it is never picked up by mistake.

Crunch and flavour science
What happens when you eat Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.
The bite is the same in both flavours: the thin, flat Walkers slice fried to a clean, light snap.
The seasoning is where the two halves part. Ready salted carries only salt, so what you taste is fried potato. Cheese and onion adds dried onion first, then whey, lactose and cheese powder, with citric and malic acid for a small tang.
The finish of the ready salted is clean and salty with nothing lingering; the cheese and onion leaves a soft dairy aftertaste. Eating one after the other shows how much work a seasoning does.
Getting the best from a bag
Split the bags into two piles when the box is opened, so the people who want one flavour do not have to dig for it.
How storage changes it
Unopened bags keep best in a cool, dry cupboard. Once a bag is opened, finish it that day; 25g is sized to be eaten in one go.

Serving ideas
Two flavours without heat make this a box for lunches and parties alike.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
The Lunchbox Week
Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
Children's Party Bags
Single bags of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps are the easiest thing to put in a party bag.
- Multipack of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps
- Party bags
- A list of the guests' allergies from their parents
- Ask parents about allergies before the party, and check the Ingredients and Nutrition tab against every answer.
- Keep each bag sealed and add it to the party bag last.
- Label any bag that goes to a child with an allergy so the right one reaches them.
When in doubt about an allergy, leave the crisps out of that child's bag.
The Crisp Sandwich
The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps was practically built for.
- 2 slices of soft white bread
- Salted butter, soft enough to spread
- One bag or a good handful of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps
- Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
- Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
- Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
- Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.
Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.
Soup Crunch
A bowl of tomato soup and a few Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps crumbled over the top is lunch in the time it takes to heat the pan.
- 2 bowls of hot tomato soup
- A handful of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps
- Black pepper
- Heat the soup until it is steaming.
- Crumble the crisps over the top just before it goes to the table.
- Finish with a grind of black pepper.
Add the crisps at the last second. Left in the soup for more than a minute they soften.
Spanish Style Crisp Omelette
A short cut Spanish omelette where Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps stands in for the slow fried potato.
- 5 eggs
- About 100g of Walkers Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion Crisps
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- A little chopped parsley
- Beat the eggs in a bowl and stir in the crisps. Leave for five minutes so they soften into the egg.
- Heat the oil in a small non stick frying pan over a medium heat.
- Cook the mixture gently for 4 to 5 minutes until almost set, then slide it onto a plate, flip it back into the pan and cook for 2 more minutes.
- Rest for a few minutes and serve warm or at room temperature with the parsley.
The crisps are already salted, so the egg needs no salt of its own.
