Walkers in brief.
Six 25g bags of Walkers BBQ Sauce flavour crisps, 150g in all. The label gives 127 kcal and 0.16g of salt for each bag.
The seasoning reads like a barbecue sauce taken apart: sugar, paprika, tomato, onion, garlic and a little acid, with smoked maltodextrin and smoked sunflower oil for the smoke and carob flour underneath. The crisps are thin slices of potato cooked in sunflower and rapeseed oil, and the pack says they are suitable for vegetarians, with no added MSG or artificial colours.
Allergens. No allergens are highlighted in the published ingredients; may contain cereals containing gluten, milk, mustard and soya. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

Walkers, in full.
A good barbecue sauce is sweet, tangy, rich with tomato and a little smoky, and Walkers BBQ Sauce flavour crisps put the same ideas on a thin potato crisp. This multipack holds six 25g bags, 150g in total. The full product name on the pack is BBQ Sauce Flavour Potato Crisps.
The seasoning, ingredient by ingredient
According to the published pack listing, the crisps are made from potatoes, sunflower and rapeseed oils in varying proportions, a BBQ sauce flavour seasoning and antioxidants (rosemary extract, ascorbic acid, a tocopherol rich extract and citric acid).
The seasoning is one of the longest in the Walkers range, and it reads like a recipe for the sauce. Sugar comes first, as it does in many barbecue sauces. Then flavouring, paprika powder, hydrolysed protein, dextrose, onion powder, potassium chloride, malic and citric acids, salt, tomato powder, garlic powder, carob flour, smoked maltodextrin, smoked sunflower oil, and paprika extract for colour.
What each part does
Sugar and dextrose give the sweetness a barbecue sauce needs. Paprika powder brings a warm, sweet pepper flavour and colour without the burn of chilli, and no chilli is listed. Tomato, onion and garlic powders are the base of most barbecue sauces. Malic and citric acids provide the tang that vinegar gives a bottled sauce. Hydrolysed protein is a savoury ingredient made by breaking proteins down into smaller pieces, and it adds depth much as a dash of Worcestershire sauce does in a marinade.
The smoke comes from two carriers: smoked maltodextrin, a starch powder that has been smoked, and smoked sunflower oil. Carob flour, milled from the pods of the carob tree, has a sweet, roasted, slightly cocoa like flavour, and it adds a darker note under the sweetness.
The numbers for one bag
The label gives 127 kcal, 7.3g of fat, 0.6g of saturates, 13g of carbohydrate, 0.7g of sugars, 1.2g of fibre, 1.6g of protein and 0.16g of salt for a 25g bag. Per 100g that is 509 kcal, 29g of fat, 2.2g of saturates, 2.8g of sugars and 0.65g of salt. On the UK front of pack scale, fat is high, saturates and salt are medium, and sugars are low. One bag is about 6% of an adult's daily energy reference intake and 3% of the salt.
With sugar at the top of the seasoning, 2.8g of sugars per 100g may look lower than you would expect. The seasoning is only a small part of each crisp's weight, so even a sugar led seasoning leaves the crisp green for sugars on the front of pack scale.
Allergens and diet
No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the published ingredients. The allergy advice says the crisps may contain cereals containing gluten, milk, mustard and soya. The pack states they are suitable for vegetarians and made with no added MSG or artificial colours. No vegan or gluten free claim is made, so we would not describe them as either. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.
How the crisps are made
The crisp underneath is the thin Walkers slice, cut from washed potatoes, rinsed, and fried in the sunflower and rapeseed blend until the water has gone and the starch has set brittle. The long seasoning is dusted over while the crisps are warm, so the oil on the surface holds it, and the pack says the bags are packaged in a protective atmosphere, which keeps oxygen away from the oil.
Where it fits
BBQ sauce sits between the sweet and the savoury flavours in the range. It is sweeter than smoky bacon, gentler than salt and vinegar, and without the heat of a chilli crisp. That makes it a good match for anything that suits a barbecue sauce: a burger, a pulled pork or pulled jackfruit bun, sausages, or cheese on toast.
For another sauce inspired flavour in the same six bag format, there is Walkers Heinz Tomato Ketchup, and alongside it we stock Walkers Smoky Bacon, Roast Chicken, Worcester Sauce, Prawn Cocktail, Salt and Vinegar and Cheese and Onion. For a barbecue flavour in a different shape, Walkers Bugles Southern Style BBQ is a corn snack in a 110g bag.
Keeping them fresh
The pack advises a cool, dry place. Keep the bags in the outer pack until needed and finish a bag once it is open. Give each bag a gentle shake before opening, because a long seasoning like this one has fine powders that settle to the bottom.

Crunch and flavour science
What happens when you eat Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.
The bite is the thin Walkers slice with a light, clean snap, which carries a long seasoning without getting heavy.
The seasoning opens sweet, from sugar and dextrose, then brings paprika, tomato, onion and garlic. Malic and citric acids give a sauce like tang, hydrolysed protein adds savour, and smoked maltodextrin and smoked sunflower oil bring the smoke. Carob flour adds a roasted note underneath.
The finish is sweet and smoky, with a gentle tang. At 0.65g of salt per 100g it is seasoned rather than salty, and there is no chilli heat to build.
Getting the best from a bag
Serve it with anything that would take a barbecue sauce: burgers, sausages, a pulled pork bun or cheese on toast.
How storage changes it
Keep the bags sealed and dry in the outer pack, and finish a bag once it is opened.

Serving ideas
Sweet, smoky and without chilli heat, this is a crisp for burger night and cheese on toast.
Serving ideas, tried and simple
Barbecue Bap with a Crunch
Leftover roast or pulled meat, a soft bap and a handful of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps for texture.
- 2 soft white baps
- Leftover pulled pork, chicken or beef, warmed
- Coleslaw
- A handful of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps
- Warm the meat through until piping hot.
- Fill the baps with meat and a spoon of coleslaw.
- Top with the crisps, press the lid down and eat straight away.
Reheat leftovers only once and make sure they are steaming hot all the way through.
Chilli Cheese Toastie with a Crunch
A cheese toastie with Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps pressed inside for heat and crunch.
- 2 slices of bread
- Butter
- A handful of grated Cheddar
- A small handful of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps
- Butter the outside of both slices.
- Fill with the cheese and the crisps, lightly crushed.
- Toast in a dry pan over a medium heat for 3 minutes a side, pressing down, until golden and melted.
Crush the crisps only lightly; whole pieces keep more crunch inside the melted cheese.
The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly
How to put a sharing bag of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps out so the last handful is as good as the first.
- A sharing bag of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps
- A wide, shallow bowl
- A clip or a peg
- Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
- Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
- Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.
Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.
The Lunchbox Week
Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps comes as separate bags, which is exactly what a week of packed lunches needs.
- One multipack of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps
- A lunchbox with a dry compartment
- Keep the bags sealed in the outer pack until the morning you use them.
- Pack one bag per day, away from anything wet like fruit or a yoghurt pot.
- Check the per bag figures on the Ingredients and Nutrition tab if you are counting calories or salt for a child.
Small sealed bags stay crisp for far longer than a sharing bag decanted into tubs.
The Savoury Snack Board
Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.
- A bag or caddy of Walkers BBQ Sauce Crisps
- A wedge of mature Cheddar
- Pickled onions or cornichons
- Sliced apple
- A few slices of ham
- Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
- Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
- Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.
Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.
