About this crisp

Walkers in brief.

A 150g sharing bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar, the sharp one among the classic flavours. The label divides it into five 30g servings of 153 kcal each and advises finishing an opened bag within three days.

The tang comes from potassium acetates and citric acid rather than liquid vinegar, with flavourings, potassium chloride, sugar, salt and yeast extract. The crisps are thin potato slices cooked in sunflower and rapeseed oil, and the pack says they are suitable for vegetarians, with no added MSG.

Allergens. No allergens are highlighted in the published ingredients; may contain cereals containing gluten, milk, mustard and soya. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

Worth a crunch?

The sharing bag of the sharp classic. No vinegar on the list, just dry acids that do the same job, and about half the salt per 100g of cheese and onion. Put it next to a soured cream dip and something rich.

The whole story

Walkers, in full.

Salt and vinegar is the flavour that makes the corners of your mouth tingle, and this 150g sharing bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar is the size for a table of people. The label divides it into five 30g servings and asks you to eat an opened bag within three days.

Where the vinegar is

Read the published ingredients and you will not find vinegar. According to the pack listing, the crisps are made from potatoes, sunflower and rapeseed oil in varying proportions, a salt and vinegar seasoning and antioxidants (rosemary extract, ascorbic acid, a tocopherol rich extract and citric acid). The seasoning lists acids (potassium acetates and citric acid), flavourings, potassium chloride, sugar, salt and yeast extract.

The acids do the job of the vinegar. Vinegar is a liquid, and a liquid would turn a crisp soft, so powdered seasonings use dry acids instead. Potassium acetates are salts of acetic acid, the acid that gives vinegar its sourness and smell, and citric acid adds a brighter sharpness on top. Acids come first on the seasoning list, which is why this is the sharpest of the classic Walkers flavours rather than the saltiest.

Why the salt figure is lower than it tastes

Per 100g the label gives 0.64g of salt, about half the 1.2g of Walkers Cheese and Onion and Ready Salted. Two things on the list explain the gap. Potassium chloride tastes salty but contains no sodium, and potassium acetates, the vinegar acid, are potassium salts too. The salt figure on a UK label is worked out from sodium, so a seasoning that leans on potassium can taste sharp and salty while showing a lower number.

A sharing bag in numbers

Per 30g serving the label gives 153 kcal, 8.8g of fat, 0.7g of saturates, 16g of carbohydrate, 0.3g of sugars, 1.3g of fibre, 1.8g of protein and 0.19g of salt. That serving is about 8% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 3% of the salt. Per 100g it is 510 kcal, 29g of fat, 2.3g of saturates, 0.9g of sugars and 0.64g of salt, which is high for fat, medium for saturates and salt, and low for sugars on the UK front of pack scale.

The whole bag is five servings. If you are counting, pour 30g into a small bowl rather than eating from the bag.

Allergens and diet

No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the published ingredients. The allergy advice says the crisps may contain cereals containing gluten, milk, mustard and soya. The pack states they are suitable for vegetarians and made with no added MSG. No vegan or gluten free claim is made, so we would not describe them as either. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

How the crisps are made

These are the standard thin Walkers slices: potatoes washed and cut thin, rinsed of surface starch, and fried in the sunflower and rapeseed blend until almost all the water has gone. The acid seasoning is tumbled over the warm crisps so the oil on each slice holds it, and the pack says the bag is packaged in a protective atmosphere, with the air replaced by a gas mix to keep the oil fresh until you open it.

Serving the bag

Salt and vinegar suits a table where there is something rich to cut through: sausage rolls, cheese, cold meats or a creamy dip. A soured cream dip is a particularly good match, because the cool, fatty dip softens the acid and the acid lifts the dip. Serve the crisps in a wide, shallow bowl so the ones at the bottom are not crushed, and top up from the bag rather than pouring it all out at once.

A chip shop night at home

If you are frying fish or making fish finger sandwiches at home, a bowl of salt and vinegar crisps on the table does the job of the vinegar bottle for anyone who wants that sharpness without soggy chips. Crush a handful over a portion of mushy peas for crunch, or serve the crisps with tartare sauce as a dip. The sharpness works against the batter and the fat in the same way malt vinegar does.

Other sizes

For one person there is a 45g bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar, and for lunches a six bag multipack of 25g bags. Salt and vinegar also appears in every size of the Walkers Classic Variety box. For a sharing bag of a different classic, we stock Walkers Cheese and Onion and Walkers Ready Salted at 150g.

After opening

The pack advises storing it in a cool, dry place and eating it within three days once opened. Roll the top down tightly and clip it, and keep it away from the kettle and the cooker; an open bag softens quickly in a warm, steamy room.

Crunch and flavour science

What happens when you eat Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.

The bite is the thin Walkers slice, a light snap that lets the acid reach the tongue straight away.

The seasoning leads with potassium acetates and citric acid, the dry stand ins for vinegar, then flavourings, potassium chloride, a little sugar and salt, and yeast extract for a savoury base.

The finish is sharp enough to make the mouth water, with a lingering tingle from the acids. The salt is lower than it tastes: 0.64g per 100g on the label.

Getting the best from a bag

Pair the bag with something creamy or rich, such as a soured cream dip, cheese or sausage rolls, so the acid has something to cut.

How storage changes it

Clip the bag tightly after opening and finish it within three days, as the pack advises.

Serving ideas, tried and simple

The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly

How to put a sharing bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps out so the last handful is as good as the first.

2 min4 to 6 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A sharing bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps
  • A wide, shallow bowl
  • A clip or a peg
Method
  1. Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
  2. Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
  3. Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.

Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.

Soured Cream and Chive Dip

A cool dip for Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps, and a good way to calm down anything with heat in it.

5 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 150ml soured cream
  • A small bunch of chives, snipped
  • A squeeze of lemon
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Stir the chives and lemon into the soured cream.
  2. Season with black pepper; leave the salt to the crisps.
  3. Chill for ten minutes and serve in a small bowl next to the bag.

Thicker crisps and chips scoop best; thin ones are better dipped at the corner.

Fish Finger Butty with a Vinegar Crunch

Salt and vinegar is the chip shop flavour, so Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps belongs next to the fish.

15 min1 personEasy
You'll need
  • 4 fish fingers
  • 2 slices of white bread or a soft bap
  • Tartare sauce or ketchup
  • A handful of Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps
Method
  1. Cook the fish fingers as the pack says, until piping hot.
  2. Spread the bread with tartare sauce or ketchup.
  3. Layer the fish fingers, then a handful of crisps on top.
  4. Squash the lid on and eat while the crisps still crackle.

A few crisps on the side do the job of the chips without the second pan.

The Pub Table at Home

What to pour next to Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps, whether or not there is alcohol involved.

1 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag of Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps
  • A cold drink: a crisp lager, a dry cider, a cola or a ginger beer
  • A small bowl
Method
  1. Chill the drink properly; cold carbonation cuts through salt and fat.
  2. Serve the crisps in a small bowl rather than from the bag, so they stay dry.
  3. Pair salty and meaty flavours with something malty, and sharp ones like salt and vinegar with something sweeter.

Water on the table as well is a good idea with anything salty.

The Savoury Snack Board

Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag or caddy of Walkers Salt and Vinegar Crisps
  • A wedge of mature Cheddar
  • Pickled onions or cornichons
  • Sliced apple
  • A few slices of ham
Method
  1. Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
  2. Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
  3. Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.

Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.
