About this crisp

Tyrrells in brief.

A 150g sharing bag of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage, hand cooked English crisps seasoned with cooked chicken powder, dried sage and parsley, onion, garlic and black pepper. The label suggests five 30g servings, at 151 kcal and 0.36g of salt each.

This one contains real chicken, so it is not suitable for vegetarians. No allergens are highlighted in the ingredients, but the allergy advice says it may contain milk. The pack carries a gluten free claim, and the brand states it uses no artificial flavours or colours.

Sage leads the herbs, backed by a sage extract, for the taste of a roast chicken with stuffing. The pack names KP Snacks Limited as the maker, and the listing gives England as the country of origin.

Allergens. No allergens are highlighted in the published ingredients; may contain milk. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

Lee's verdict

Worth a crunch?

A Sunday roast in a crisp: real cooked chicken powder, sage twice over, parsley, onion and a little black pepper on a hand cooked English crisp. Not vegetarian, because of the chicken; may contain milk; gluten free by the pack's claim.

The whole story

Tyrrells, in full.

Roast chicken with sage is the flavour of a Sunday lunch, the bird and its sage and onion stuffing, and Tyrrells builds it on a hand cooked crisp. This is the 150g sharing bag, which the label suggests serves five. The full product name on the pack is chicken and sage seasoned potato crisps.

The ingredients

According to the published pack listing, the crisps are made from potatoes, sunflower oil, rice flour, yeast extract, sugar, salt, onion powder, dried herbs (parsley and sage), natural flavourings, cooked chicken powder, garlic powder, ground black pepper, citric acid and sage extract.

Real chicken

This seasoning lists cooked chicken powder, made from real chicken. That gives a roasted, savoury depth, but it also means the crisps are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. For a vegetarian roast chicken flavour, the Walkers Roast Chicken crisps we stock are labelled suitable for vegetarians.

Sage and parsley

Sage is the herb of sage and onion stuffing, with a warm, slightly piney, peppery taste that suits roast poultry and pork. Here it appears twice, as dried sage and as sage extract, so it comes through clearly. Dried parsley adds a fresh, green note, and onion and garlic the savoury base of a stuffing.

How the flavour is built

Rice flour carries the seasoning and helps it stick. Yeast extract leads the flavour ingredients, giving a savoury, gravy like depth; sugar and salt balance it, and natural flavourings round out the roasted character. Ground black pepper adds a little warmth, and citric acid a small lift, much as a squeeze of lemon lifts a roast.

Hand cooked

The listing describes these as hand cooked English crisps. Hand cooking means frying the slices in batches, which gives a harder, more uneven crunch than a crisp fried continuously on a conveyor, with some slices curled and folded.

Numbers per serving

The label gives 151 kcal (632 kJ), 8.3g of fat, 0.7g of saturates, 15.9g of carbohydrate, 0.5g of sugars, 2g of fibre, 2.2g of protein and 0.36g of salt for each 30g serving. That is about 8% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 6% of the salt. Per 100g it is 504 kcal (2105 kJ), 27.7g of fat, 2.4g of saturates, 53.1g of carbohydrate, 1.5g of sugars, 6.6g of fibre, 7.4g of protein and 1.2g of salt.

Reading the front of the pack

On the UK front of pack scale, per 100g, fat at 27.7g is red, as it is for fried crisps generally. Saturates at 2.4g are amber. Sugars at 1.5g are green. Salt at 1.2g is amber.

Allergens and diet

No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the published ingredients, but the allergy advice says the crisps may contain milk. The seasoning contains cooked chicken powder, so the crisps are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The pack carries a gluten free claim, and no gluten containing cereal is on the list. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

What the brand leaves out

The pack says Tyrrells never uses artificial ingredients such as artificial flavours, colours or MSG, and there is no colour on this list at all. Yeast extract, which is on the list, is naturally rich in glutamates, which is worth knowing for anyone who avoids glutamates altogether.

The pack

The front of the orange bag uses a black and white vintage photograph, like the other Tyrrells packs we stock: three women dressed as chickens striding across a street, one carrying a bunch of sage. The current pack also carries a new flash.

Serving the bag

Roast chicken and sage suits a picnic, a pub style lunch or a bowl beside a cold beer. It goes well with a chicken or turkey sandwich, a leftover roast sandwich with stuffing, or a bowl of leek and potato soup.

In the kitchen

Crushed, the crisps make a savoury, herby crumb for chicken or turkey escalopes, or a topping for a chicken and leek pie. Because of the chicken powder, keep the crumb for meat dishes.

Storage and packaging

The pack advises a cool, dry place and, once opened, an airtight container. The bag is packaged in a protective atmosphere, and the published recycling guidance says the whole packaging can be recycled with carrier bags at large supermarkets and should not go in home recycling.

Other Tyrrells flavours

In the same 150g bag we stock Tyrrells Lightly Sea Salted, Sea Salt and Black Pepper, Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar, Smoked Paprika, Sweet Chilli and Red Pepper and Cheddar Cheese and Chive. For a vegetarian choice in the same bag, Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive, Smoked Paprika, Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar and Lightly Sea Salted are all labelled suitable for vegetarians.

Crunch and flavour science

What happens when you eat Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.

The bite is the hard, uneven crunch of a batch fried crisp.

The seasoning is savoury from yeast extract and cooked chicken powder, herby from dried sage, sage extract and parsley, with onion, garlic and black pepper.

The finish is roasted and herby, with the warm, piney note of sage lingering.

Getting the best from a bag

Serve it with a leftover roast chicken and stuffing sandwich.

How storage changes it

Keep the bag cool and dry, and move opened crisps to an airtight container.

Serving ideas

A roast chicken and sage crisp for picnics and leftover roast sandwiches.

Serving ideas, tried and simple

The Crisp Sandwich

The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps was practically built for.

3 min1 personEasy
You'll need
  • 2 slices of soft white bread
  • Salted butter, soft enough to spread
  • One bag or a good handful of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps
Method
  1. Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
  2. Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
  3. Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
  4. Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.

Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.

The Pub Table at Home

What to pour next to Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps, whether or not there is alcohol involved.

1 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps
  • A cold drink: a crisp lager, a dry cider, a cola or a ginger beer
  • A small bowl
Method
  1. Chill the drink properly; cold carbonation cuts through salt and fat.
  2. Serve the crisps in a small bowl rather than from the bag, so they stay dry.
  3. Pair salty and meaty flavours with something malty, and sharp ones like salt and vinegar with something sweeter.

Water on the table as well is a good idea with anything salty.

Soup Crunch

A bowl of tomato soup and a few Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps crumbled over the top is lunch in the time it takes to heat the pan.

2 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 2 bowls of hot tomato soup
  • A handful of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Heat the soup until it is steaming.
  2. Crumble the crisps over the top just before it goes to the table.
  3. Finish with a grind of black pepper.

Add the crisps at the last second. Left in the soup for more than a minute they soften.

Crisp Crumbed Chicken Goujons

Crushed Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps doubles as the crumb and the seasoning, so there is nothing else to add.

25 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 2 chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • A sharing bag or two small bags of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps
Method
  1. Heat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, gas mark 6, and line a tray.
  2. Crush the crisps finely in the bag or a bowl with the end of a rolling pin.
  3. Coat each strip in flour, then egg, then press it into the crisp crumb.
  4. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, turning once, until the chicken is cooked through with no pink in the middle.

The crisps are already salted, so taste before adding any more salt at the table.

The Savoury Snack Board

Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag or caddy of Tyrrells Roasted Chicken and Sage Crisps
  • A wedge of mature Cheddar
  • Pickled onions or cornichons
  • Sliced apple
  • A few slices of ham
Method
  1. Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
  2. Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
  3. Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.

Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.
