About this crisp

Tyrrells in brief.

A 150g sharing bag of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive, hand cooked English crisps seasoned with mature cheddar cheese powder, onion, dried chives and garlic. The label suggests five 30g servings, at 152 kcal and 0.39g of salt each.

The cheese on the list is mature cheddar, and the only colour is paprika extract. Hand cooking in batches gives a harder, more uneven crunch than a continuously fried crisp. Milk is in the seasoning.

The pack says the crisps are suitable for vegetarians and carries a gluten free claim, and the brand states it uses no artificial flavours or colours. The label says the crisps are made in England from Red Tractor certified potatoes. Once opened, the pack advises an airtight container. It suits a cheeseboard or a party bowl.

Allergens. Contains milk. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

Worth a crunch?

Mature cheddar, onion and dried chives on a hand cooked English crisp, with paprika extract as the only colour. Sharper than a standard cheese and onion, softened by chive. Vegetarian and gluten free by the pack's statements; milk is in it.

The whole story

Tyrrells, in full.

Mature cheddar and chive is a sharper, more savoury take on cheese and onion, and Tyrrells puts it on a hand cooked crisp. This is the 150g sharing bag, which the label suggests serves five. The full product name on the pack is mature cheddar cheese and chive seasoned potato crisps.

The ingredients

According to the published pack listing, the crisps are made from potatoes, sunflower oil, lactose (milk), onion powder, mature cheddar cheese powder (milk), yeast extract, salt, sugar, dried chives, garlic powder and a colour, paprika extract. The only colour is paprika extract, from peppers.

Real mature cheddar

The cheese in the seasoning is mature cheddar, dried to a powder. Mature cheddar is aged for longer than mild, which gives it a sharper, deeper flavour, and that sharpness is what separates this crisp from a milder cheese and onion. Lactose, the natural sugar in milk, carries the powder and adds a gentle sweetness.

Chives and onion

Dried chives, the mildest member of the onion family, give a fresh, green note, while onion powder and garlic give the savoury depth. Onion powder sits ahead of the cheese on the list, so the allium side leads, with the cheese close behind.

Hand cooked

The pack describes these as hand cooked English crisps. Hand cooking means frying the slices in batches, so the oil temperature drops when each batch goes in and recovers as it cooks. That gives a harder, more uneven crunch, with some slices curled and folded, than a crisp fried continuously on a conveyor.

Red Tractor potatoes

The label says the potatoes are Red Tractor certified. Red Tractor is the British farm and food assurance scheme, which checks standards on the farm, and the label says the crisps are made in England.

Numbers per serving

The label gives 152 kcal (632 kJ), 8.3g of fat, 0.8g of saturates, 15.9g of carbohydrate, 1.1g of sugars, 2g of fibre, 2.3g of protein and 0.39g of salt for each 30g serving. That is about 8% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 7% of the salt. Per 100g it is 505 kcal (2106 kJ), 27.8g of fat, 2.6g of saturates, 52.9g of carbohydrate, 3.6g of sugars, 6.5g of fibre, 7.5g of protein and 1.3g of salt.

Reading the front of the pack

On the UK front of pack scale, per 100g, fat at 27.8g is red, as it is for fried crisps generally. Saturates at 2.6g are amber. Sugars at 3.6g are green. Salt at 1.3g is amber, in the upper part of its band.

Allergens and diet

The published ingredients highlight milk, in the lactose and the mature cheddar cheese powder. The published listing gives no may contain advice. The pack says the crisps are suitable for vegetarians and carries a gluten free claim; no gluten containing cereal is on the list. They are not vegan, because of the milk. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

What the brand leaves out

The pack says Tyrrells never uses artificial ingredients such as artificial flavours, colours or MSG. The colour here is paprika extract. Yeast extract, which is on the list, is naturally rich in glutamates, which is worth knowing for anyone who avoids glutamates altogether.

The pack

The front of the yellow bag uses a black and white vintage photograph, like the other Tyrrells packs we stock: three women in hats, the one in the middle holding a whole round cheese. Under the name it reads hand cooked English crisps and est. Herefordshire, England.

Who it suits

A cheese crisp with no heat suits a mixed table, and with a vegetarian statement and a gluten free claim it covers several diets at once, though not anyone avoiding milk.

Serving the bag

Cheddar and chive suits a cheeseboard, a ploughman's lunch or a party bowl. Serve it with apple slices, pickled onions or a pale ale, or beside a jacket potato with soured cream and chives to echo the flavour.

In the kitchen

Crushed, the crisps make a cheesy, herby crumb for the top of a fish pie, a cauliflower cheese or a macaroni cheese. Add the crumb in the last few minutes of baking so it browns without burning.

Storage and packaging

The pack advises a cool, dry place and, once opened, an airtight container. The bag is packaged in a protective atmosphere, which keeps oxygen away from the oil until you open it. The published recycling guidance says the whole packaging can be recycled with carrier bags at large supermarkets and should not go in home recycling.

Other Tyrrells flavours

In the same 150g bag we stock Tyrrells Lightly Sea Salted, Sea Salt and Black Pepper, Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar, Smoked Paprika, Sweet Chilli and Red Pepper and Roasted Chicken and Sage. Lightly Sea Salted has half the salt of this bag, at 0.65g per 100g.

Crunch and flavour science

What happens when you eat Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.

The bite is the hard, uneven crunch of a batch fried crisp, some slices curled and folded.

The seasoning leads with onion and lactose, then mature cheddar powder, yeast extract and a little sugar, with dried chives and garlic.

The finish is savoury and cheesy with a fresh, green chive note.

Getting the best from a bag

Serve it with a ploughman's lunch or on a cheeseboard.

How storage changes it

Keep the bag cool and dry, and move opened crisps to an airtight container.

Serving ideas

A sharp cheddar and chive crisp for cheeseboards and ploughman's lunches.

Serving ideas, tried and simple

The Savoury Snack Board

Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag or caddy of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps
  • A wedge of mature Cheddar
  • Pickled onions or cornichons
  • Sliced apple
  • A few slices of ham
Method
  1. Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
  2. Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
  3. Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.

Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.

The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly

How to put a sharing bag of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps out so the last handful is as good as the first.

2 min4 to 6 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A sharing bag of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps
  • A wide, shallow bowl
  • A clip or a peg
Method
  1. Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
  2. Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
  3. Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.

Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.

Crunch on Top of Macaroni Cheese

A crushed bag of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps makes a quicker, saltier crust than breadcrumbs ever will.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A dish of macaroni cheese, made and hot
  • 1 bag or a large handful of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps
  • A little grated Cheddar
Method
  1. Crush the crisps in the bag with the heel of your hand into rough pieces, not dust.
  2. Scatter them over the macaroni with a little grated cheese.
  3. Grill for two to three minutes until the cheese bubbles. Watch it; crisps catch fast.
  4. Rest for two minutes before serving so the top sets.

Keep some crushed crisps back and add them at the table for a second layer of crunch.

Soup Crunch

A bowl of tomato soup and a few Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps crumbled over the top is lunch in the time it takes to heat the pan.

2 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 2 bowls of hot tomato soup
  • A handful of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Heat the soup until it is steaming.
  2. Crumble the crisps over the top just before it goes to the table.
  3. Finish with a grind of black pepper.

Add the crisps at the last second. Left in the soup for more than a minute they soften.

The Crisp Sandwich

The oldest trick in the British lunchbox, and the one Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps was practically built for.

3 min1 personEasy
You'll need
  • 2 slices of soft white bread
  • Salted butter, soft enough to spread
  • One bag or a good handful of Tyrrells Cheddar Cheese and Chive Crisps
Method
  1. Butter both slices right to the edges. The butter is what the crisps stick to.
  2. Tip the crisps onto one slice in a loose layer, two deep at most.
  3. Close the sandwich and press down firmly with a flat hand until you hear the crunch give.
  4. Eat it straight away. A crisp sandwich is a five minute food; after that the bread wins.

Soft white bread is the point here. Anything crusty fights the crisps instead of cushioning them.
