The seasoning uses sugar, paprika powder, yeast, onion and garlic with three flavour enhancers, and no chilli is listed, so it is warm rather than hot. Wheat is in the dough and milk in the seasoning; the pack says the crisps are suitable for vegetarians.

Allergens. Contains cereals containing gluten and milk. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

The whole story

Pringles, in full.

Paprika has a sweet, warm, peppery taste, and Pringles Paprika puts it on the stackable Pringles crisp. This is the 165g tube, which the label suggests serves five to six. The full product name on the pack is Paprika Flavour Savoury Snack.

The crisp

According to the published pack listing, the crisps are made from dehydrated potatoes, sunflower oil, wheat flour, corn flour, rice flour, a paprika seasoning, maltodextrin, an emulsifier (E471), salt and a colour, annatto norbixin. The dough of potato and flours is pressed into the curved Pringles saddle, so every crisp has the same shape and the same even snap.

The paprika seasoning

The seasoning lists sugar, paprika powder, flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate, disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate), dextrose, yeast powder, onion powder, salt, a granulated broth (salt, hydrolysed vegetable protein, sunflower oil and flavourings), garlic powder, paprika extract for colour, citric acid and sweet whey powder (milk).

Paprika powder is second on the list, right after sugar, so it is the flavour you taste. Paprika is made from dried, ground sweet peppers, which is why it tastes warm and fruity rather than hot. The sugar and dextrose bring out that sweetness. Yeast powder, the granulated broth and the flavour enhancers give a deep savoury base, onion and garlic round it out, and a little citric acid lifts the finish.

Warm, not hot

No chilli is listed in the seasoning. The warmth comes from paprika itself, which is made from mild peppers. For anyone who likes flavour without the burn, this is one of the easier Pringles to share, and it sits between the plain Original and the hot Pringles range.

What a granulated broth is

The granulated broth is a small blend within the seasoning: salt, hydrolysed vegetable protein, sunflower oil and flavourings, made into granules, much like a stock cube. Hydrolysed vegetable protein is made by breaking plant proteins into smaller pieces, which releases savoury compounds. The broth gives the paprika something savoury to sit on.

Numbers per serving

The label gives, per 30g serving, 155 kcal (649 kJ), 8.7g of fat, 0.8g of saturates, 17g of carbohydrate, 1.1g of sugars, 1.1g of fibre, 1.9g of protein and 0.42g of salt. That is about 8% of an average adult's daily energy reference intake and 7% of the salt. Per 100g it is 518 kcal, 29g of fat, 2.7g of saturates, 56g of carbohydrate, 3.7g of sugars, 3.8g of fibre, 6.4g of protein and 1.4g of salt.

Reading the front of the pack

Per 100g, fat at 29g is red on the UK scale. Saturates at 2.7g are amber. Sugars at 3.7g are green. Salt at 1.4g is amber, but near the top of the band, close to the 1.5g line where it would turn red.

Allergens and diet

The published ingredients highlight cereals containing gluten, from the wheat flour, and milk, from the sweet whey powder. The published listing gives no may contain advice for this tube. The pack says the crisps are suitable for vegetarians. They are not vegan, because of the milk, and not suitable for anyone avoiding gluten. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

The tube and its recycling

The label says the tube is packaged in a protective atmosphere. The published recycling guidance says the lid can be recycled and the seal should not be. The pack names Kellogg's, at MediaCityUK in Salford, as the distributor.

Serving the tube

Paprika suits a snack board of cured meats, olives and cheese, a bowl of houmous or a cold glass of beer. The warm pepper flavour also goes well with grilled chicken or a tray of patatas bravas style roast potatoes, and a stack makes a good side for a chicken wrap.

In the kitchen

Crushed paprika Pringles make a smoky red crumb for chicken thighs before roasting, or a topping for a tuna pasta bake. A handful over a bowl of roasted pepper soup echoes the paprika in the seasoning, and a few whole crisps make a crunchy garnish for a plate of scrambled eggs.

Who it suits

Paprika suits anyone who likes a flavoured crisp with warmth but no heat, and it is a good tube for a mixed group, since it is marked suitable for vegetarians and carries no chilli. It does not suit anyone avoiding gluten or milk.

Other Pringles flavours

In the same 165g tube we stock Pringles Original, Sour Cream and Onion, Cheese and Onion, Salt and Vinegar, Smokey Bacon, Texas BBQ Sauce and Prawn Cocktail. For a similar warm, sweet profile with smoke, Texas BBQ Sauce is the nearest relative.

Storage

Store the tube in a cool, dry place and press the lid on firmly once opened.

Crunch and flavour science

What happens when you eat Pringles Paprika Crisps comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.

The bite is the formed Pringles saddle, even and crumbly.

The seasoning leads with sugar and paprika for a sweet, fruity pepper flavour, then flavour enhancers, yeast, a granulated broth, onion and garlic for a savoury base.

The finish is warm and gently sweet, with no chilli heat.

Getting the best from a bag

Serving ideas

A warm, sweet paprika tube for snack boards and grilled food.

Serving ideas, tried and simple

The Savoury Snack Board

Pringles Paprika Crisps earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag or caddy of Pringles Paprika Crisps
  • A wedge of mature Cheddar
  • Pickled onions or cornichons
  • Sliced apple
  • A few slices of ham
Method
  1. Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
  2. Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
  3. Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.

Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.

The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly

How to put a sharing bag of Pringles Paprika Crisps out so the last handful is as good as the first.

2 min4 to 6 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A sharing bag of Pringles Paprika Crisps
  • A wide, shallow bowl
  • A clip or a peg
Method
  1. Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
  2. Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
  3. Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.

Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.

Crisp Crumbed Chicken Goujons

Crushed Pringles Paprika Crisps doubles as the crumb and the seasoning, so there is nothing else to add.

25 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 2 chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • A sharing bag or two small bags of Pringles Paprika Crisps
Method
  1. Heat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, gas mark 6, and line a tray.
  2. Crush the crisps finely in the bag or a bowl with the end of a rolling pin.
  3. Coat each strip in flour, then egg, then press it into the crisp crumb.
  4. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, turning once, until the chicken is cooked through with no pink in the middle.

The crisps are already salted, so taste before adding any more salt at the table.

Crunchy Salad Topper

A handful of Pringles Paprika Crisps does the job croutons do on a salad, with no oven involved.

5 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bowl of dressed salad leaves
  • Cherry tomatoes and cucumber
  • A handful of Pringles Paprika Crisps
Method
  1. Dress the salad first and toss it well.
  2. Break the crisps into large pieces over the top.
  3. Serve at once, before the dressing reaches them.

Add them after the dressing, never before, or they soak it up and soften.

The Pub Table at Home

What to pour next to Pringles Paprika Crisps, whether or not there is alcohol involved.

1 min2 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag of Pringles Paprika Crisps
  • A cold drink: a crisp lager, a dry cider, a cola or a ginger beer
  • A small bowl
Method
  1. Chill the drink properly; cold carbonation cuts through salt and fat.
  2. Serve the crisps in a small bowl rather than from the bag, so they stay dry.
  3. Pair salty and meaty flavours with something malty, and sharp ones like salt and vinegar with something sweeter.

Water on the table as well is a good idea with anything salty.
