The whole story

Kettle, in full.

Kettle Krinkle is the ridged range from Kettle: thick, deep ridged chips hand cooked in Norfolk. Lightly Salted is the plain one, with nothing but sea salt on the chip. This is the 130g sharing bag.

Three ingredients

According to the published pack listing, the chips are made from select potatoes, vegetable oils (rapeseed and sunflower, in varying proportions) and sea salt. That is the whole list, so what you taste is the potato, the oil and the salt.

Select potatoes

The list names them as select potatoes. With only oil and sea salt added, the potato is the whole flavour.

Cooking in batches

Hand cooked chips are fried a batch at a time, which is why no two chips look quite alike: some curl, some fold, and the ridges vary from chip to chip.

Hand cooked and ridged

The front of the pack says hand cooked in Norfolk. Hand cooking in batches gives a harder, crunchier chip than continuous frying, and the deep ridges make each chip thicker and sturdier still, which is the bold crunch the front promises.

Lightly salted

At 0.35g of salt per 100g, this is the least salty Kettle Krinkle we stock, and one of the least salty crisps of any kind we sell. On the front of pack scale it is amber, just over the 0.3g line.

Sea salt

Sea salt is made by evaporating seawater. Chemically it is mostly sodium chloride, like any other salt, so it counts towards the salt figure in the same way.

Absolutely nothing artificial

The front of the pack says absolutely nothing artificial, and with three ingredients there is nothing on the list to question.

The oils

The chips are cooked in rapeseed and sunflower oils, in varying proportions. The label gives 2.9g of saturates per 100g.

Numbers per 100g

The label gives 523 kcal (2182 kJ), 30.5g of fat, 2.9g of saturates, 54g of carbohydrate, 0.5g of sugars, 4.6g of fibre, 5.9g of protein and 0.35g of salt per 100g. The listing gives no serving size, so the figures on this page are per 100g.

Reading the front of the pack

On the UK front of pack scale, per 100g, fat at 30.5g is red, as it is for fried crisps generally. Saturates at 2.9g are amber. Sugars at 0.5g are green. Salt at 0.35g is amber, only just over the 0.3g line.

Allergens and diet

No allergens from the UK list of 14 are highlighted in the published ingredients. The listing for this barcode carries no allergy advice and no diet statements, so read the pack for any may contain statement and any diet statements. Recipes and factory arrangements change, so check the allergy advice on the pack you receive.

The dip chip

A plain, thick ridged chip is made for dipping: firm enough for a thick guacamole, a salsa or a soured cream and chive dip, and neutral enough to let the dip carry the flavour.

Sugars

With nothing but sea salt on the chip, sugars are 0.5g per 100g, green on the front of pack scale.

Plain for a reason

A plain chip is the one to choose when the food beside it carries the flavour: a strong cheese, a spicy dip or a rich soup.

Party bowls

For a gathering, put out a bowl of Lightly Salted beside the Balsamic and the Sweet Chilli and Sour Cream so guests can choose.

The pack

The blue bag carries the Kettle Krinkle name in white over a ridged chip, a new bold crunch flash, a sketch of a salt cellar and a dish of salt, and the words hand cooked in Norfolk and absolutely nothing artificial.

The Kettle Krinkle range

Kettle Krinkle is the ridged range from Kettle. The bags we stock are Lightly Salted, Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and Sweet Chilli and Sour Cream, all 130g, all hand cooked in Norfolk, and all with 0.35g to 0.38g of salt per 100g.

A sharing bag

At 130g, the bag is made for sharing. Tip a handful into a bowl rather than eating from the bag, and clip it shut between servings.

Who it suits

A plain, lightly salted crunchy chip suits anyone who prefers no strong flavour, anyone watching salt, and anyone who wants a sturdy dipper.

Serving the bag

Plain ridged chips go with almost anything: a cheeseboard, a sandwich lunch, a bowl of soup or a cold beer. Put out a bowl beside two or three dips for a gathering.

The crisp sandwich

A plain, sturdy chip keeps its crunch in a crisp sandwich of buttered bread.

In the kitchen

Crushed, the ridged chips make a sturdy, neutral crumb for fish or chicken, or a crunchy topping for soup or a gratin.

Storage

Keep the bag somewhere cool and dry, and clip it shut between servings.

Other Kettle Krinkle

What happens when you eat Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips comes down to three things, and reading them in order explains the bag from the first crunch to the salt left on your fingers.

The bite is hard and crunchy, a thick, hand cooked ridged chip.

The seasoning is a light sprinkle of sea salt, so the taste is the potato.

The finish is clean and lightly salty.

Serving ideas

A plain, sturdy ridged chip for dips and cheeseboards.

Serving ideas, tried and simple

Five Minute Tomato Salsa

A fresh salsa takes five minutes and makes Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips a proper starter.

5 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 4 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
  • Half a red onion, finely chopped
  • A small bunch of coriander, chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • A pinch of salt
Method
  1. Mix the tomato, onion and coriander in a bowl.
  2. Season with lime juice and a small pinch of salt; the chips bring salt of their own.
  3. Leave it ten minutes for the flavours to meet, then serve with the chips.

Drain off any liquid that gathers in the bowl before serving, or the chips go soft on the scoop.

Soured Cream and Chive Dip

A cool dip for Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips, and a good way to calm down anything with heat in it.

5 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • 150ml soured cream
  • A small bunch of chives, snipped
  • A squeeze of lemon
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Stir the chives and lemon into the soured cream.
  2. Season with black pepper; leave the salt to the crisps.
  3. Chill for ten minutes and serve in a small bowl next to the bag.

Thicker crisps and chips scoop best; thin ones are better dipped at the corner.

The Savoury Snack Board

Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips earns a place on a board next to cheese, pickles and cold meats.

10 min4 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A bag or caddy of Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips
  • A wedge of mature Cheddar
  • Pickled onions or cornichons
  • Sliced apple
  • A few slices of ham
Method
  1. Arrange the cheese, meats and pickles on a board.
  2. Tip the snacks into a small bowl on the board rather than loose, so they stay dry.
  3. Serve with a knife for the cheese and let everyone build their own bites.

Keep the pickles in their own dish; their juice softens anything crisp it touches.

The Sharing Bowl, Done Properly

How to put a sharing bag of Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips out so the last handful is as good as the first.

2 min4 to 6 peopleEasy
You'll need
  • A sharing bag of Kettle Krinkle Lightly Salted Ridged Potato Chips
  • A wide, shallow bowl
  • A clip or a peg
Method
  1. Choose a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one; the weight of a deep pile breaks the crisps at the bottom.
  2. Pour out half the bag, not all of it.
  3. Clip the bag shut and refill the bowl as it empties, so what is in the bowl is always fresh.

Once a sharing bag is open, clip it tight. Air is what turns a crisp soft.
